if you didn't apply for a position with such a firm, it is a scam.
if you got the ';appointment'; letter via the internet, it is very likely a scam -- real companies use the post and their letters have real signatures of real people.

aside from that, how could anyone tell?
it is [shudder] quite possible for scammers to falsely use the name of a real firm and even a real person within a real firm. All they'd have to do in their internet scam is substitute a false telephone number and/or reply to address and/or website.
send no money, nor banking details. honest firms do not need them.
